Bone grafting or guided bone regereration is where the jawbone is selectively built up to accommodate a dental implant or other restorative device. Bone grafting is a very successful procedure that is used frequently for the support of dental implants and to reconstruct damage from trauma etc. The bone used to graft sometimes is taken from a donor site from the patient. This is called an autograph.
More common these days the graft material is from a bone bank, which is prepared from cortical bone harvested from carefully screened human donors and triple sterilized before vacuum packing. This sis referred to as an Allograft. They come in all shapes, sizes & consistencies such as granular, injectable paste and bocks.
Also becomming more common in our reconstructive implant practice are synthetic sources or Allografts. These bio-engineered proteins can stimulate your bodies ability to regenerate bone. INFUSE® Bone Graft contains a manufactured bone graft material that is FDA-approved for use in certain oral surgery procedures, including sinus augmentation and localized alveolar ridge augmentation.
These methods are considered to be some of the safest of all biological implants.
