Frenectomy

The Benefits of a Frenectomy

Before and after frenectomy photo

Northland Dental Medicine is one of the top providers of dental care in the Pittsburgh region. One procedure offered by our surgical staff is a frenectomy. A frenulum is anatomically defined as a fold of membrane that checks or restrains motion to a part of the body. There is a frenulum in your mouth that attaches your upper lip to your gums, as well as another that connects the lower lip and gums. Deviations in development to the frenulum can cause numerous complications. Problems in speech patterns and tooth misalignment can be the result of a frenulum that is too short or too thick, and a shortened frenulum in infants can hinder the baby’s natural ability to breastfeed. In instances such as these, when the frenulum deformity disrupts daily life, corrective procedures become necessary in order to resolve the problem. Entrust the team at Northland Dental Medicine to get you back on track.

A Quick and Easy Operation

A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that is performed as an outpatient procedure. In can be completed with a scalpel, but the experts at Northland Dental Medicine prefer a quick and simple method utilizing a laser. Before the operation, infants and young children may first be sedated with a conscious anesthesia, while adults undergoing the process receive local anesthesia. The whole ordeal typically takes about 15 minutes. The laser methodology used during this procedure causes very little bleeding and requires no suturing; it is also preferable to a scalpel surgery as it provides our clients with considerably less discomfort following the operation, as well as a shorter healing time overall.

If you or your loved one require a frenectomy, fret not. The Dr Michael Corsello will fix your malfunctioning frenulum quickly and carefully, and you will be good as new in no time!
