Remain Comfortable Throughout Treatment with Sedation Dentistry

Woman sitting in dentist's chair with her eyes closed. If you experience anxiety at the thought of visiting the dentist, Dr. Michael E. Corsello offers sedation dentistry to put you at ease during your dental procedure. At Northland Dental Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA, we can provide patients with two types of sedation, either oral sedatives or intravenous (IV) sedation, depending upon their unique needs. We understand that you may need a little help relaxing while you are in the dentist's chair, so we will design a customized treatment plan to ensure your comfort and make your experience as pleasant as possible.

Types of Sedation

At our office, we can provide different forms of sedation to patients depending upon the type of procedure performed and their level of anxiety. In addition to a local anesthetic, sedation will typically be provided during implant procedures and oral surgery. However, it can be administered during less invasive procedures to ensure optimal comfort during your treatment. Dr. Corsello offers two different sedation options:

Oral Sedation

After evaluating the patient's medical history, physical health, and the length of the procedure, your dentist may recommend an oral sedative. Oral sedatives place you in a deeply relaxed state, while preserving your ability to answer questions and respond to the staff's instructions. The doctor will instruct you to take your oral sedative about one hour prior to your dental procedure to reduce any lingering anxiety. If you are given an oral sedative, you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your dental appointment.

Intravenous Sedation

IV sedation is typically stronger than oral sedation and places patients in a state of near-sleep, but not total unconsciousness. Throughout the treatment, the doctor can adjust the level of sedation according to your individual needs. For procedures involving either IV sedation or general anesthesia, an anesthesiologist will be on site to monitor your health and ensure your safety.

We understand that you may need a little help relaxing while you are in the dentist's chair, so we will design a customized treatment plan to ensure your comfort and make your experience as pleasant as possible.

Candidates

During your consultation, Dr. Corsello will determine if sedation is the right option for you.  Sedation can help patients who have:

  • Dental anxiety
  • Sensitive teeth
  • A fear of needles
  • A low pain threshold
  • Difficulty sitting still
  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson's Disease, or other conditions which make it difficult to sit for long periods
  • Arthritis or other medical issues that make lying in an exam chair uncomfortable

At your appointment, make sure to be prepared to discuss your medical history, any medications you take, and any other factors that might relate to your candidacy.
